The Chihuahua standard recognizes smooth coat and long coat varieties.
There is no such breed as the teacup Chihuahuas. When someone asks
me for a teacup Chihuahua, I understand they are looking for the
tinier 2-4 lbs Chihuahuas as oppose to the more familiar and possibly
healthier 4-6 lbs Chihuahuas.
The tiny or teacup Chihuahuas really are adorable
and easy to bring everywhere you go. HOWEVER, they are not suited
for all pet owners. They really are delicate, especially as young
puppies, and need to be treated accordingly. The tiny or teacup
Chihuahuas are not a pet for children, nor do they belong in a busy
family with very young children.
Better suited for families and older children
is a standard 5-6 lbs Chihuahua. Granted, you must still be very
careful when puppies are young. However, they can live happily in
a family with responsible adults and gentle compassionate children.
